Local Businesses Happy to Help Charities Despite Spending Cuts!!

Bailey Hunter and Square Twenty One have proved that despite recent spending cuts, local companies are still donating generously to good causes.

Legal recruitment specialists Bailey Hunter and event management firm Square Twenty One teamed up to hold a fundraising evening and race night on Thursday 21 October at the Leeds Marriott Hotel, raising £1,556.02 for Candlelighters - Yorkshire’s pre eminent children’s cancer charity.

With over 50 guests from a range of Yorkshire law firms attending the event, guests were given an opportunity to join in the fun of a night at the races, with the evening compered by Lancashire based race company Fun Racing.

Guests also had a chance to win one of thirty great raffle prizes, ranging from a wine tasting evening to a night’s bed and breakfast and a game of golf for four people which all were donated by local businesses.

The night ended with a highly contested auction for a handcrafted wooden dolls house which was eventually purchased by David Winterburn from Harrison Winterburn Associates, raising a further £100 for Candlelighters.

Claire Cox, Director of Bailey Hunter Ltd said of the event, “We chose Candlelighters as our charity this year as it is a local charity and such a great cause. We were thrilled with how much we were able to raise for them. The evening went extremely well and we had lots of great comments from our guests throughout the night who seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. Thanks to all our clients who supported the event, from attending the event to donating raffle prizes and purchasing raffle tickets/making cash donations. A big thank you also to Square Twenty One and Fun Racing for making the whole event such a great success!”

Jodie Speight, Director of Square Twenty One Ltd, said of the evening, “The team at Square Twenty one is delighted to have been involved with this event and to help support such a worthwhile cause. The night was a real success and we are very grateful for the generosity of our guests and sponsors and the organisations who donated prizes for our raffle and goody bags.”

We are very grateful to Bailey Hunter and Square Twenty One and their guests for choosing our charity. 2010 has been a busy year for us with the launch of our “Big Move Appeal” to raise an extra £500,000 to support the move of the Children’s Teenage Cancer Unit from Jimmy’s to the LGI.”

Bailey Hunter take part in Sponsored 10k Walk for NELST

Good afternoon,

We completed our 10km sponsored walk yesterday in 1.5 hours. The walk was to raise money for hard pressed legal advice and support charities in Yorkshire and the North East with all the money raised going to agencies that facilitate access to justice for the poorest and most disadvantaged members of society, providing free legal help to people facing problems such as homelessness, debt, employment and family issues.

We were joined by Claire Rolston, Empoyment Lawyer with CLR Law, and around 100 other legal professionals in Leeds, including Leeds University, BPP Law School and the following law firms; Irwin Mitchell, Mills & Reeve, DLA Piper and DWF. The walk commenced at Leeds Combined Court and finished at Revolution in the Electric Press, passing The Yorkshire Post, Leeds Canal, Royal Armouries and The Calls. We were very lucky with the weather, especially considering how grim and wet it was the previous and preceding day.

Thursday 24th September was the celebration event of Bailey Hunter's 1st Birthday in business Party.

The event was held in the prestigious grade II listed building of 3 Albion Place in Leeds, where the champagne was flowing and a huge birthday cake was shared. Clients, friends and business supporters joined in the celebrations.

Jane Walton, Head of Yorkshire Region; Make Your Mark said: “We have worked alongside Claire since the launch of her business in 2008 and are so pleased to see that the business has grown from strength to strength - this success is certainly well deserved. It can be difficult to take that step into launching your own business but Claire is a great example of how things can, and do, work out. To be celebrating a year in business is a great achievement, particularly in the current climate and we wish Claire all the very best for the future.”

Thank you to everyone who came along last Thursday, who made it a brilliant night! A special thank you to Catherine Gilburt of BHP Law, who travelled all the way down from Stockton on Tees for the evening.

And what better reason for a party than celebrating getting through your 1st year in business!
As I said on the night, a few people have commented on the timing of setting up a business in a recession but personally I have no regrets and think there a lot of advantages in doing this; the main one being that you have to be so much more proactive and work so much harder. This just sets the groundwork for a much better company in the long-term with no room for complacency. I like a challege and it’s much more rewarding to find success in tough economic times than have it handed to you on a plate. So onwards and upwards into year 2 and let's hope there are many more to come.

How to Create A Good CV

Due to the unfortunate amount of redundancies in the legal profession, alongside other industries, there are an increasing number of candidates looking for work at the moment.

Your CV is a crucial sales tool as this is usually the first thing the employer/agency receives when applying or registering for work, so here are a few hints and tips to try and get yours noticed.

Also, always follow-up. Once you have posted/emailed your CV allow a couple of days and then call to check it has been received and what the next stage is and when you are likely to hear further.

Do

• Try to keep it to 2 pages, 3 maximum
• Split into 4 sections and use subheadings; Personal Details, Employment History, Qualifications and Interests
• Always put in reverse chronological order, i.e. starting with the most recent first
• If there are any gaps in employment – add an explanation
• Keep statements factual giving good examples of experience gained
• Remember to include contact details including daytime contact number and personal email address
• Spell check and proof read – ideally get a trusted eye to proof read too
• Concentrate mainly on current/last job

Don’t

• Include a photo
• List irrelevant personal information, e.g. names of children/pets
• Add very general statements without giving examples, e.g. I am an excellent teamplayer
• Invent hobbies/interests that can catch you out – be prepared to embellish on them at interview
